the subtleties of water color brush evade me, but water color pencil gets similar effect without the mess. Combined with black ink, the effect is pretty nice.

I'd seen Kid Koala nearly a year prior to this show, his style has made some really cool progress since then. He seems to be drawing more influence from the bassy warble of dubstep, and works it into his style nicely, keeping that jazzy feel with lots of obscure spoken audio from forgotten albums.

Rain City Art Mob

Saturday was the first art mob, and it went pretty well! Chose to meet on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery, which was a bit of a bunk decision as that street is currently being rebuild on all sides plus the weather was threatening drizzle so once everyone was there we headed down to the Library Square atrium. Future art mobs will most likely be hosted at the same spot, it's more flexible with easy shelter from rain and access to the oh-so-crucial creativity catalyzing coffee.

The chemistry to the afternoon was super fun as a good number of the artists had not met each other before. Grabbed some beers and eats at the Beatty Street Bar and Grill after the sketching was done with

Got to catch up with a friend from back home this weekend, Janna was in town last week so we hit up a show at the New Media Club. I left my sketchbook at home for this one, opted to dance my ass off instead. The first band was pretty mellow, but the next two kicked up some synth and it was good times.

Friday evening I finally got to see Fixed Fragmented Fluid, Michele Gagne's improvised abstract jazz animation experiment. Definitely groundbreaking, the sounds produced by the musicians were mind bending. Some satanic deal must have been involved to endow Peter Evans with the unearthy ability to make a piccalo trumpet sound like a tuba. Paul Plimly's erratic motion at the piano were mesmerizing, especially when he started reaching into the instrument and messing with the strings directly, a hand-plucked harpsichord. His chemistry with Lucas Niggli was uncanny, they were reading each others minds from across the stage. The experience was far over my head, I was totally overwhelmed by the assault of bizarre sounds. If you're into experimental music, this is right up your alley

After the show I headed to Brady's for Tanner's Birthday party/triumphant return. Can't believe we tapped out the keg so fast. Epic dance party ensued.

Saturday featured hooping at a park by the seawall and absorbing some of this "sun" that I've heard so much about. I had forgotten about the giant ball of fire our world orbits. Manage to take myself out with a hula hoop. Apparently putting it around your neck and spinning it as hard as you can causes it to smack you in the face. You win this round, physics!

Later that night after the pairs had gotten back from Aziz Ansari, Tanner discovered the joy of drunken Nun-chucks AKA Drunk-chucks!

The impulse struck to draw on the dishwasher, so I handed Dr Omis the marker and he got to it while I sketched what I thought it should look like. The resulting conversation was as follows

Meet Terik and Steve

grew up with these guys in the lil' ol' prairie town that is Neepawa, MB

High school in a tiny town can get pretty dull, so there were a few garage bands trying to make the most of an unhealthy amount of free time (all that peace and relaxation can really get to ya)

by 10th grade it was my band, Steve and Terik's band, and set of junior high kids calling themselves "stuck to your jumper"

My band lacked talent but made up for it in Gusto

Stuck to your jumper ..... was about as good as you'd think a band named "Stuck to your jumper" could be

Steve and Terik's band actually knew what they were doing

We put on a half dozen shows, renting out the town's community run theater and art gallery along with a soundsystem from a guy one town over

Flailing around stage mashing out power chords, arguing at band practices and lugging around equipment were some of my favorite times in High School, and actually putting on the shows ourselves rocked. Big props to these guys for sticking with the music, it's a ballsy move and touring around is a rough way to spend your days, it takes stones.

This Friday they came through Vancouver and played a short set at the Astoria. I barely managed to get any sketches of them before they had to pack up and let the other guys take the stage, a real drag seeing as the "other guys" were ... dissapointing.

I'm not a big screamo listener; if I want hard sounds there needs to me more technique (see -> NinjaSpy or System of a Down) Continuance had real talent and put on a great but short set. I could tell these guys have been steadily improving since their already awesome high school jams. The other bands were just wailing on their instruments haphazardly. Points for enthusiasm, and the crowd loved it, just not my thing.

a spare set of earmuffs shields me from the sonic barrage that was whipping itself into a storm around me

At their show, their massive amount of motion made drawing with accuracy impossible, resulting in frantic scrawls of suggested resemblance, but now in a well lit session, minimal motion, they come into focus

Metal, ska and reggae .. it's a fresh blend, gives their sound a great range. Too many bands are all up with no downtime and it flattens their performance out, but Ninjaspy is all over the map, jumping from sound to sound like .... well ... ninja

Thanks for the inspiration, Ninjaspy. Lookin forward to the next show

Hit up Basic Inquiry for the first time in two and a half months. Loose gesture session, had some fun with it. This girl knows how to friggen pose, pushes all the right parts, twists in great ways, super fun to draw. I'd forgotten what it was like to draw someone who's actually holding a pose! Woulda had twice the results but a hunger pang knocked me out early. Seems like I can't go two hours without eating these days. I gots the hunger.

Powerman 5000 rocked some faces too, but by then all my drawing mana had been spent so I just enjoyed the show. You can tell the really pro stadium-conditioned groups by how they move. The real pros know how to hit poses and control the crowds energy, it's great

Drawing on both sides of the paper is making the scans look kinda messy. They don't show through that well when you look at the originals. Besides, when you draw big and do 40 in an evening, you can't afford to get finicky with that stuff.

a drawing can never be replicated. You can record the patterns of light that bonce off it and trace them onto a grid and pulse the patterns through fiber optics, but you can never replicate the drawing itself and the imprint of a mind that goes into making it.

PS; sorry the layout of the scans is getting messy. Photoshop is glitching out from too much art. If I keep getting faster this room is gonna start smelling like burning plastic every time I try to comp my scans

Thursday night was crazy

After work I headed to the final dress rehersal of Madama Butterfly at the Queen Elisabeth Theater, having been invited there to sketch the performers. Having never been to an Opera, it was a huge inspiration. I set up my giant easel right above the pit band in front of the first row of seats. With the stage on my left and the pit band in front of me I caught enough bounce light from the stage lights to see what I was doing without totally ruining my eyes, though a small clip light would have been helpful

Most of the sketches were done on my giant pad, so I'll scan those ones later when I have access to a better scanner. This wimpy little 8.5X11 thing is way too tiny. Even the medium size sketchpad required multiple passes and comp to get these images you see. Gotta invest in a big ol' flatbed soon ...

Just started doing this the other day. I'm right handed, left hand is useless to draw with .. till now. Never really tried to draw lefty, time for a challenge.

Oh snap, double trouble.

If I can get lefty working, I'll draw twice as fast! So far the flow is pretty good, but lefty's a bit of a drunk driver. Gonna sober him up with some Betty Edwards exercises over the next week, hopefully get three more practices in by Sunday night if I'm lucky

Wow. I've been so inside my own head for the past year that I didn't notice the perfect cartoon was being made in my own back yard. Had I known that LOSE was so awesome, I'd have applied long ago.

The team is great, the IP rules, the style is fun, it's the perfect challenge. Feels like a video game I get paid to play.

Signed with a tv studio to animate super villains in a kids TV show.

This is some IP I think I can really sink my teeth into. Always loved good super villain cartoons. Used to watch a ton of spider man and anything else with a cool super villain in it as a kid

The heroes were always so bland and predictable, at least the super villains had some personality.

Hope I can sleep tonight, I have a bad habit of tossing on turning the night before big steps like this.

oh yea, saw how to train your dragon today. Amazing flick, ate up the visuals. Dragon designs and animation was easily the best ever done. Hands down. Dreamworks; Thank you for making family films awesome! Animation doesn't have to be about lame buddy buddy fart jokes. Ok, the story was formulaic and some of the voice acting was a bit off, but dragons have never looked this amazing before and I dig it. Animating on a movie like that is on my bucket list, so clearly now I have to build a time machine to go back and work on the movie that just came out

Wow I forgot how much harder it is to draw a male model! Girls tend to have softer, more general shapes that are easier to fake your way through, male anatomy is blockier, but can also be a lot more complex. Instead of smooth flowing curves there's complicated lumpy muscles.

Olympics: week one

Wow

Never seen anything like this. Mobs that cover half the downtown core with families, sports fans, party people in flag capes and all manner of street performer the city can muster.

The vibrant energy saturates the streets. Ziplines over robson square squeal every few minutes drawing cheers from the mob, cops in bright yellow vests punctuate the view as they scan for trouble makers.

Opening night protest featured tons of native dance and a hockey game complete with goals and a scoreboard in the middle of the crowd. The next morning a few dozen anarchists made asses of themselves breaking windows before being pummeled to the pavement by pissed off cops as the crowd shouted shame, since then spirits of protest quieted down around the heavily patrolled party areas

elsewhere the voices of dissent are more audible. On Hastings a small tent city has congealed in an empty lot, colorful banners and tribal drums resonating distress signals of our cities forgotten peoples, swept under the rug by the multinational corporate pavilions that have occupied every other open space downtown with gleaming white tents glimmering with projected images drawing the people in with promise of shiny things

The skytrain system is running at max capacity attempting to hasten the bottlenecked crowds that regularly flood the system. The people are herded with sheep gates and bullhorns through corridors lined with homogenous advertisements telling them what to buy next as they clutch their flags and overpriced souveneirs.

It's an ideal city for a young artist, as the downtown population temporarily doubles and pours into the streets a myriad of potential drawing subjects mills about just waiting to be drawn. There's just not enough hours in the day and not enough energy in my body to keep up with it.

Tonight I remained in to work on a fresh painting after spending the afternoon listening to homeless rant their life tales at me as I sketched their tent city. Made some cash over the past week doing portraits for a few coins each, usually a 5er from a dad for drawing two or three of his kids. I'm surprised I haven't seen any other sketchers, I would have guessed that the local artists would have hopped on this opportunity but perhaps they're too crowd-weary to deal with the masses. Not that I blame them, I can only take an hour or so of the mob before retreating to some peace.

This has been fantastic practice though, I'm starting to get the hang of eye flipping and using memory skills to continue a face after the subject has moved. Need to start adding in more torso next, too many floating heads in these sketches, but I've needed practice on faces for awhile.

GALAXY WARS has been chipped away on by myself and my roommates for the better part of a year, worked on it whenever we had spare time. The process was very organic and I think the result is pretty tight. I learned a lot about the process of game design working on this title, and am really looking forward to expanding on what we got started here.

Tattoo design

A few weeks ago I decided to try doing some custom tattoo designs on commission. My good friend Erin is my first customer, she asked for "flowing feminine notes" which I took as a challenge for some abstract design.

I used a photo of a model friend to reference some feminine curves, and abstracted the shape into a flowing double helix that wrapped around her body. I then turned the ribbons into bars and drew the notes to "Fur Elise" running along them.

I'm quite happy with the results

The fact that someone would be willing to pay me to be my canvas is really cool, and I can't wait to see how the ink turns out.

Another friend has already commissioned another custom tattoo, and I'm fleshing out the idea for it now.

I've been keeping busy working from home for the past few weeks. I'm very stoked that Clint has started holding Vanarts Alumni Lifedrawing sessions, the second one is tomorrow. He gets major points for that cuz nothing beats a live model to really get in the zone for some practice.

Also, as soon as I get a copy of quicktime pro working I'll be able to upload both my demo reels. They haven't been a top priority seeing as I'm not looking for employment.
