an over due update

I've been neglecting this blog all year. Probably because I've been pretty content with my day-work at Nerdcorps. Here's some stuff I made

Saturday, October 20, 2012

Some work from last year. This was the most fun summer of work imaginable. LOSE is a fantastic production to work on, I've never seen so much creativity in the hands of the animators. Every sequence you see in this reel was originally boarded as something different, and I was given the freedom to go wild and push things beyond their limits

2010 nerdcorps work

the delay between finishing an episode and having it released is about one year, so everything here is pretty dated. I will be posting some better stuff from my more recent work as soon as the new season of League of Super Evil is aired this spring

baby steps into water color

the subtleties of water color brush evade me, but water color pencil gets similar effect without the mess. Combined with black ink, the effect is pretty nice.

Here's some early experiments.

markers and pencil

went through a bit of a phase of flow of consciousness cartoons, just making lines to the music until stuff forms. Strange results from brush-tip marker and colored pencil. Lots of drawing over old pencil sketches.

enjoyable explorations of a strange subconscious

lifedrawing

finally got my ass back to lifedrawing for a sunday gesture session, and lucky me one of my favorite models was posing!

entangled

Based on some sketches from zeds dead, this is the first in what will be a series of increasingly disturbing psychedelic paintings as I focus on projecting the bizarre contents of my subconscious

Zeds Dead at Fortune sound lounge

This was a whole other level of concert. I've been to some sweet shows, but I was overwhelmed by Zeds Dead. Fucking inspiring.

new years eve sketches

I've never liked new years eve parties. The end of a year makes me reflective and introspective, not particularly charged to party. Despite my angsty musings over .... nothing ... Jenn hosted an awesome party. My sketchbook was calling to me, so I grabbed a fat marker with a broad felt tip and got to doodling.

kid koala at biltmore

I'd seen Kid Koala nearly a year prior to this show, his style has made some really cool progress since then. He seems to be drawing more influence from the bassy warble of dubstep, and works it into his style nicely, keeping that jazzy feel with lots of obscure spoken audio from forgotten albums.

Unfortunately it was so packed I didn't have room to stand to get many sketches

some new friends made for inspiring company for a sunday evening art session

those abstract swoops are what happen when I put pencil to paper and just play with line. Not sure what the talon-clock thing is all about, just kinda happened

my energy was all spent from sketching Endast, so I only got a few. Just couldn't keep up with Ninjaspy's energy

Funky Winker Bean

fresh venue, always fun

This place is a great spot for a metal show, I'll definitely be back there soon (though my ears still ring from forgetting my plugs at home) similar vibe as Astoria, but much much closer to my apartment

I do appreciate the sight of a dozen metal heads with hair past their shoulders head banging in unison like some pagan worship ritual

Rain City Art Mob

Saturday was the first art mob, and it went pretty well! Chose to meet on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery, which was a bit of a bunk decision as that street is currently being rebuild on all sides plus the weather was threatening drizzle so once everyone was there we headed down to the Library Square atrium. Future art mobs will most likely be hosted at the same spot, it's more flexible with easy shelter from rain and access to the oh-so-crucial creativity catalyzing coffee.

The chemistry to the afternoon was super fun as a good number of the artists had not met each other before. Grabbed some beers and eats at the Beatty Street Bar and Grill after the sketching was done with

The next few weekends will be busy, but eventually I'm hoping to make the Rain City Art Mob a weekly gathering

started off with a bunch of brush-tip-pen crowd sketches

after moving to the library switched to a felt tip pen to draw some robits
